R is a free, open-source programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, originally created by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland in the early 1990s. It gained formal recognition as a GNU project in 1997, released version 1.0.0 in February 2000, and is overseen by the R Foundation for Statistical Computing, based in Vienna, Austria, since 2003. The Foundation stewards R’s development, funding, copyright, and community infrastructure.
