Symbian was a British software company and mobile operating system developer established in 1998 in London. Its operating system became one of the leading platforms for smartphones, particularly Nokia devices, during the 2000s. Symbian provided essential features for mobile applications, multimedia, messaging, internet browsing and wireless communication. It was supported by several major mobile manufacturers, including Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. In 2008, Nokia acquired full ownership of Symbian Limited and transferred the platform's development to the Symbian Foundation. The operating system gradually lost popularity as Android and iOS became dominant, and Nokia ended its major development and support in 2014.
