The 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games were the 10th edition of the premier international sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Held from 26 June to 4 July 1999 in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina (USA), more than 7,000 athletes from around 150 countries competed in 19 Olympic-style sports, including athletics, swimming, basketball, cycling and more, across multiple university campuses and venues in the Triangle region. Organised by Special Olympics International, a global non-profit headquartered in Washington, D.C., the event aimed to promote inclusion, respect and athletic achievement for participants with intellectual disabilities through high-level competition and international camaraderie. The opening ceremony at Carter–Finley Stadium was attended by celebrities and highlighting the global scale of the Games. As part of a longstanding series that began in 1968, the 1999 Games contributed to the Special Olympics mission of empowering athletes, fostering social understanding and encouraging community involvement in inclusive sport.
