Amstel is a Dutch beer brand founded in Amsterdam in 1870 by Charles de Pesters and Johannes van Marwijk Kooy. The brewery was named after the Amstel River and originally produced Bavarian-style lager. Amstel expanded beyond the Netherlands during the late 19th century and became an important export beer. In 1968, the brewery was acquired by Heineken, and production at the original Amsterdam site ended in 1982, moving to Zoeterwoude. Today, Amstel is one of Heineken’s major international beer brands and is available in more than 110 markets worldwide.
