Artifact is a digital collectible card game set in the Dota 2 universe, developed and published by Valve Corporation, an American video game company based in Bellevue, Washington. Released in November 2018 for Windows, macOS and Linux, the game combines strategic deckbuilding with multiplayer online card play, spanning multiple lanes of combat inspired by Dota’s gameplay. Designed with input from renowned card designer Richard Garfield, Artifact was notable for its deep mechanics and competitive focus but faced criticism at launch for its monetisation and complexity, leading to a dramatic decline in its player base shortly after release. In March 2021, Valve ceased active development and made the game free to play, with all cards and content accessible without purchase, effectively marking the end of its primary commercial lifecycle. Despite this, Artifact remains available on Steam for players to download and experience.
