Atomwaffen Division (AWD) was an international neo-Nazi extremist network founded in 2015 in the southern United States by Brandon Russel. The name “Atomwaffen” means “atomic weapons” in German. AWD grew from the online far-right Iron March forum into a decentralized, cell-based extremist group advocating accelerationist white supremacist ideology. It has been linked to multiple hate-motivated murders, plots against infrastructure, and clandestine militant activity. In multiple countries, cells or affiliates adopted its ideology and symbols. On November 10, 2024, the group formally announced its disbandment, although its ideology and some affiliated elements continue to pose threats.
