It was officially introduced in 2006 by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of leading electronics and media companies including Sony and Panasonic. The format was designed to replace DVDs by offering significantly higher storage capacity and improved video quality, enabling Full HD and later 4K Ultra HD content. Blu-ray became widely adopted in home entertainment systems, gaming consoles, and movie distribution. Although its usage has declined due to digital streaming services, Blu-ray remains valued for high-quality physical media and archival storage.
