Boston Dynamics is a U.S.-based engineering and robotics design firm founded in 1992 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by Marc Raibert. Headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, it has become one of the world’s most well-known robotics companies, famous for developing agile, dynamic mobile robots such as BigDog, Spot, Atlas, and Handle that showcase advanced mobility, balance, and control. In 2013 it was acquired by Google X, later sold to Japan’s SoftBank Group, and since 2020 the Hyundai Motor Group holds the controlling ownership. Boston Dynamics has transitioned from primarily research contracts to commercial offerings, with the quadruped Spot becoming one of its first mass-market products.
