Burlington Northern Railroad was a major American Class I freight railroad that operated from 1970 to 1996. It was created through the merger of the Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railway, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad and Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway. The company developed an extensive network across the northern and central United States, transporting coal, agricultural products, industrial goods and intermodal freight. In 1995, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe shareholders approved a merger, and on December 31, 1996, the two railways were formally combined to create the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, the predecessor of today's BNSF Railway.
