CrossFit is a global fitness methodology, training community, and brand that began in 2000 in Santa Cruz, California. It was founded by Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai, who formalized their training philosophy into a company and later expanded via an affiliate licensing model. CrossFit’s workouts emphasize varied, functional movements at high intensity, blending elements of weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio. Over time it evolved into a competitive sport, hosting annual CrossFit Games. In 2020, Glassman sold CrossFit to Eric Roza and Berkshire Partners, relocating the company’s headquarters to Boulder, Colorado. Today it oversees thousands of affiliate “boxes” worldwide and continues to operate its training, certification, and media services while exploring new ownership transitions.
