Founded in 1946 in Hamburg under British occupation authorities, it was initially created as a nationwide, non-partisan newspaper. Axel Springer acquired the publication in 1953, making it a flagship title of the publishing group. WELT covers German and international politics, business, finance, culture, science, technology and sport.
