The Eastern Conference of the NBA is one of the two main geographic-organizational divisions of the American professional basketball league. Created in 1970 as part of the NBA’s shift to a two-conference format, the Eastern Conference groups together teams from the eastern half of the United States (and Canada), determining league structure for scheduling, playoffs, and rivalries. It does not operate as an independent company, but as a division within the NBA — itself collectively governed by its teams.
