Empik is a major Polish retail and cultural brand known for selling books, press, music, film, games, software, and a wide array of consumer products. It began during the communist period in Poland as the state-owned Klub Międzynarodowej Prasy i Książki (International Press and Book Club) in 1948, which provided access to international media and literature. After the fall of communism, private investors acquired the chain in 1991 and rebranded it as Empik. Today the company operates a network of physical stores across Poland and beyond, as well as a substantial e-commerce platform. Empik has diversified into related services including a photography division and language schools, and it plays a significant role in the Polish cultural and retail landscape. Its operations continue to grow, blending traditional retail with digital services to serve millions of customers.
