The European Parliament is the directly-elected parliamentary institution of the European Union, representing citizens across its member states and serving as one of its principal legislative bodies. Established with roots in the early 1950s and evolving through direct elections from 1979 onward, the Parliament works alongside the Council of the European Union and the European Commission to pass EU laws, oversee other institutions, and decide the EU budget. Its legal seat is in Strasbourg, France, while core legislative and committee work takes place in Brussels and administrative support centres in Luxembourg.
