Fisherman’s Friend is a British brand of strong menthol lozenges, produced by Lofthouse of Fleetwood Ltd. in Fleetwood, Lancashire. The original formula was developed in 1865 by pharmacist James Lofthouse to help fishermen suffering from respiratory strain in harsh sea conditions. Later, it was converted into lozenge form for easier use and transport. The brand expanded from local use to become global — today it exports to over 100 countries and produces billions of lozenges annually. The company remains family owned; shares are held by a foundation and Duncan Lofthouse. The lozenges still maintain many original features in formula and packaging, combining tradition with modern standards.
