Gateway is an American computer brand founded in 1985 by Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond in an Iowa farmhouse. The company became famous for its direct-to-consumer PC sales, distinctive cow-spotted shipping boxes and affordable desktop and laptop computers. Gateway expanded into monitors, servers and other computer hardware and became a major U.S. PC manufacturer during the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2007, Taiwan-based Acer acquired Gateway for approximately $710 million, ending Gateway, Inc.'s independent corporate existence. Acer later revived the Gateway brand for consumer laptops and tablets, primarily through retail distribution in the United States. The Gateway brand itself remains active under Acer and was revived for products in 2020
