About the brand ❤️
Google Cardboard is a low-cost virtual reality (VR) platform created by Google in 2014 that enables users to experience VR using a simple viewer made from cardboard and their smartphone. Designed to make VR accessible to a wide audience, Cardboard viewers consist of a foldable cardboard shell with lenses, into which a compatible phone can be inserted to run VR-enabled apps and 360° videos. The concept was notable for being open-source, allowing anyone to build their own viewer or customize designs, and it helped spark broader interest in mobile VR at a time when high-end VR headsets were still emerging. Google promoted the platform through a dedicated app and encouraged developers to support the Cardboard SDK across Android and iOS, resulting in numerous educational, entertainment, and immersive experiences. Over time attention shifted to more advanced VR systems such as Daydream and standalone headsets, and Google Cardboard’s active development waned by the late 2010s, though it remains a pioneering product in bringing VR to a mainstream audience through an affordable and playful approach.
