Heaven’s Gate was a U.S.-based New Age / UFO-centered religious movement founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The doctrine taught that human beings were “vehicles” for souls and that a spaceship following Comet Hale–Bopp would enable adherents to transcend their earthly bodies and ascend to a “Next Level.” Over the years, followers withdrew from society, adhered to strict rules and communal living, and disseminated their beliefs via tapes and their website. In March 1997, 39 members died in a mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California, believing it would allow them to join the spaceship and move on. After that event, the group ceased to function in any meaningful form though its web presence persists.
