It was responsible primarily for operating Japan's nationwide post-office network and providing counter services for postal, banking and insurance businesses. The company was a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Post Holdings and formed one of the five companies created when Japan Post was reorganized in 2007. On October 1, 2012, Japan Post Network merged with Japan Post Service, creating Japan Post Co., Ltd. The Japan Post office network continues to operate under the successor company.
