London and North Eastern Railway was a major British railway company and one of the “Big Four” created by the 1921 railway grouping. It began operations in 1923 after combining the Great Northern, Great Central, Great Eastern, North Eastern, North British, Great North of Scotland and Hull and Barnsley railways. LNER operated an extensive network across England and Scotland, including the East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland. It became famous for high-speed trains such as the Flying Scotsman and Mallard. The company was nationalised in 1948 and absorbed into British Railways.
