Matsuya is a Japanese department-store brand with a history dating back to 1869, when Tokube Furuya established the Tsuruya kimono store in Yokohama. In 1889, the business acquired a Tokyo kimono retailer named Matsuya and adopted its name. Matsuya Co., Ltd. was formally established in 1919, while its famous Ginza department store opened in 1925. Today, Matsuya operates department stores in Ginza and Asakusa, offering fashion, cosmetics, food, luxury goods, household products and other merchandise. It remains an independent publicly listed Japanese retailer.
