Originally operated by the Australian Government, the airport was privatised in 1997 when Australia Pacific Airports (Melbourne) Pty Ltd acquired a 50-year lease, with an option for a further 49 years. The airport operates 24 hours a day without a curfew and has international and domestic terminals serving airlines and passengers from across Australia and around the world. It is owned by Australia Pacific Airports Corporation and continues to undergo major infrastructure and capacity upgrades.
