It was created by Michael “Monty” Widenius, David Axmark and Allan Larsson and became one of the most widely used database technologies for websites, applications and enterprise systems. MySQL supports SQL for storing, organizing and retrieving structured data and is available under both open-source and commercial licensing models. Sun Microsystems acquired MySQL AB in 2008, and Oracle acquired Sun in 2010. MySQL remains actively developed and supported by Oracle.
