Narcan is an American pharmaceutical brand best known for its naloxone-based products used to reverse opioid overdoses. Its nasal spray helps rapidly restore normal breathing in people experiencing an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. Originally developed by Lightlake Therapeutics and licensed to Adapt Pharma, the product received FDA approval in 2015. Emergent BioSolutions acquired Adapt Pharma in 2018 and became the brand's owner. In 2023, Narcan 4 mg nasal spray became the first naloxone product approved by the FDA for over-the-counter sale, expanding public access to emergency overdose treatment.
