Newport City Council is the local government authority responsible for the city of Newport in South Wales, United Kingdom. The present unitary authority was established in 1996 following the reorganization of local government in Wales. In 2002, it adopted its current name after Newport was granted city status. The council provides a wide range of public services, including education, housing, social care, waste management, planning, transport, environmental services and council tax administration. It is governed by elected councillors representing Newport’s wards and operates from the Civic Centre on Godfrey Road.
