Schweppes is a historic and widely recognized soft drink brand with origins in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1783, where Johann Jacob Schweppe developed one of the earliest methods for carbonating water, effectively creating the first commercially bottled soda. Over the centuries the Schweppes name became synonymous with carbonated water, tonic water, ginger ale, and other mixers and soft beverages, gaining popularity across Europe and beyond. Today the brand’s ownership and distribution are regionally divided: in many European markets the Schweppes trademark and business are managed by Suntory Beverage & Food Ltd., a major Japanese beverage company headquartered in Tokyo, while in other regions various multinational beverage companies hold the rights under license. Schweppes products are used both as standalone refreshments and as mixers in cocktails, and the brand remains valued for its long heritage, distinctive effervescence, and presence on shelves worldwide more than two centuries after its founding.
