Tatra is a historic Czech vehicle manufacturer based in Kopřivnice, known for some of the world’s earliest motor vehicles and rugged off‑road trucks. The company traces its roots back to 1850 when Ignaz Schustala founded a carriage and wagon works that later evolved into Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau‑Fabriksgesellschaft. In 1897 it built the Präsident — one of Central Europe’s first petrol‑engine automobiles. Since 1919 vehicles bore the Tatra name, inspired by the nearby Tatra Mountains. Over decades it pioneered unique engineering concepts, including the backbone tube chassis and air‑cooled engines. Although passenger car production ceased around 1999, Tatra remains active today and focuses on heavy all‑terrain trucks, military transport, and specialist vehicles for global markets. The brand is celebrated as one of the world’s oldest continuously operating automotive manufacturers and continues exporting robust trucks worldwide.
