The World Bank Group (WBG) is a global development institution headquartered in Washington D.C., launched in 1944 with the aim of financing the reconstruction of post-war Europe and later shifting to eradicating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity globally. It is composed of five inter-related organizations, delivering loans, grants, technical assistance and policy advice to nearly 190 member countries. Its governance is unique: member governments act as shareholders, and decisions are taken through a Board of Governors and Executive Directors.
