About the brand ❤️
Rio Tinto Alcan is a leading Canadian aluminum producer headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, operating as the aluminum division of the global mining group Rio Tinto. It was created formally in November 2007 following the acquisition of Alcan Inc., which traced its origins to 1902, when it was founded as the Northern Aluminum Company. Rio Tinto Alcan is engaged across the full value chain: from bauxite mining and alumina refinement to primary aluminum smelting, fabrication of sheet, billet, rod, and other aluminum products. It also owns hydroelectric operations supplying power to its smelters. Over time, the “Alcan” name has been phased out in branding in favor of simply “Rio Tinto” in many contexts, though the legal entity and its operations continue. Cost, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability are central concerns, given aluminum’s energy-intensive production and greenhouse-gas implications.
