Yemenia, officially Yemen Airways, is the national airline of Yemen and one of the country's principal air transport providers. Its origins date to Yemen Airlines, established in 1961, with operations beginning in 1962. The airline was nationalized and reorganized as Yemen Airways in 1972, while the Yemenia name was adopted in 1978 following a joint venture between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. After Yemen's unification, the airline absorbed South Yemen's Alyemda in 1996. Yemenia operates domestic and international passenger services and remains wholly owned by the Yemeni government.
