RailAmerica was an American holding company specializing in short-line and regional freight railroads. Headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, it operated a diversified portfolio of railroads across the United States and Canada, serving industries such as agriculture, energy, chemicals, forest products and manufacturing. By 2012, RailAmerica controlled 45 railroads covering approximately 7,500 miles of track in 28 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. Genesee & Wyoming acquired the company for approximately $2 billion in October 2012, after which RailAmerica was integrated into G&W's North American operations.
