The Indiana Pacers are a professional basketball franchise based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1967 as part of the ABA, the team joined the NBA in 1976 following the ABA–NBA merger. Under the ownership of Herb Simon, the Pacers have become a mainstay of American basketball, playing home games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Their name reflects Indiana’s rich racing heritage, drawing from the harness-racing “pacers” and the pace cars of the Indianapolis 500. During their ABA years, the Pacers won three league championships (1970, 1972, 1973), establishing themselves as the dominant team of that era. Since joining the NBA, they have enjoyed regular success — multiple division titles and deep playoff runs — though an NBA championship has so far eluded them. The club remains a significant part of Indiana’s sports identity, balancing a legacy of early success with ongoing ambition in the league.
